Anne Frank in the World: 1929 – 1945 Exhibit

The largest of its kind in the world, this exhibit is a presentation of over 600 photographs and 8,000 words reminding visitors about the Holocaust through Anne Frank’s story. The exhibition chronicles the life of Anne Frank as told through her famous diary as the Nazi rise to power was unfolding around her. Combating bigotry, prejudice and hatred in today’s society are just some of the goals of this truly unique and moving exhibition housed in the DeKalb History Center located in the Old Courthouse on the square in downtown Decatur.

Lost Kingdoms of the Nile: Nubian Treasures from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in conjunction with the Carlos Museum, Lost Kingdoms of the Nile features some of the most significant archaeological treasures ever found in Africa. This monumental exhibition, consisting of over 250 objects in gold, silver, bronze, ivory, stone, and ceramic, ranging in date from 7000 B.C. to modern times, provides unprecedented insight into ancient Nubia, the extraordinary African civilization that has often been overshadowed by ancient Egypt. The exhibition highlights not only some of the finest artworks ever found in ancient Africa, but also the remarkable stories of their discovery by the intrepid archaeologists who were part of the Harvard-Boston Expedition from 1913 to 1932.

The Complexity of Emergencies: Responding Through Art

This exhibit examines the visual art projects of three not-for-profit organizations working with children affected by emergencies, both in the United States and abroad. The exhibit highlights the work of The Art Reach Foundation with teachers and children in Bosnia, America’s Camp with children impacted by the 9-11 terrorism attack, and the Community Initiatives Foundation with children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The work of the organizations examined in this exhibit suggests that art-making can be used as an innovative public health tool wherever an emergency or disaster takes place.

Penguins of the Antarctic

Enjoy a color photography exhibition that reveals the black-and-white beauty of penguins, held in conjunction with the special exhibit, Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins. Photographer J. J. L’Heureux traveled to the Antarctic region six times to gather photographs of the best known and loved of all Antarctic wildlife, the penguin. The 90 photographs focus on the contrast of colors and life of this white-on-white environment, which convey the spirit of Antarctica and introduce visitors to a variety of penguin species that can be found there.

Ends of the Earth: From Polar Bears to Penguins

Journey from one end of our globe to the other to explore the fascinating (and cold!) worlds of the Arctic and Antarctic. Visitors will have the opportunity to become a polar bear, or an emperor penguin, and find out how these animals are adapted to live in the Arctic or Antarctic; build an igloo; ride a dogsled simulator; walk like a penguin and incubate an egg through the Antarctic winter; track icebergs and pack ice; and listen to the stories of polar explorers. Ends of the Earth explores the uniqueness of the earth’s Polar Regions, the current science being undertaken there, and these regions as indicators of climate change on our planet.
