Nature Unleashed:
Inside Natural Disasters
May 1 - 2
Explore natural
disasters through stunning displays, state-of-the-art animations,
large-scale images, and cultural artifacts that reveal the dynamic
relationship we have with the Earth, in a stunning new special exhibition.
Museum visitors can witness what it’s like to stand inside a roaring
tornado; trigger an underwater earthquake and simulate a tsunami; create a
virtual volcano; touch and examine real rock and lava specimens; discover
how people adapt to living at risk; and witness the resiliency of disaster
survivors. The exhibition shows that while storms, volcanoes, and other
forces of nature are formidable, they are completely natural phenomena.
Whether they're disasters or not depends on the choices we make. Nature
Unleashed examines how we can prepare for, and potentially minimize, the
impact of nature’s fury.

Dead Certain:
A Mystery Thriller by Marcus Lloyd
Charming and good
looking but never more than a few steps from self-destruction, Michael is an
out-of-work actor who was once on the verge of stardom. Elizabeth is a
theatre-obsessed ex-dancer who is now wheelchair-bound and lives alone in a
large country house. When she contacts Michael's agent and offers a large
fee if Michael will visit her and act out a play she has written, he jumps
at the chance. The evening appears to begin quite straightforwardly. But
when they start to read Elizabeth's script, Michael is startled to find
disturbing similarities to real life-including an apparent transcript of the
first conversation they had when he arrived. The suspense builds layer upon
layer as this taut psychological thriller gathers speed at an alarming rate
towards a gripping climax, where truth and illusion become
almost inseparably entangled in a real life game of cat and mouse

When Gold
Blossoms: Indian Jewelry from the Susan L. Beningson Collection
When Gold
Blossoms: Indian Jewelry from the Susan L. Beningson Collection celebrates
the dazzling beauty and awe-inspiring technical craftsmanship of Indian
jewelry with more than 150 pieces spanning 2,000 years, primarily from South
India. The title alludes to the preference for gold in South Indian
jewelry—North Indian jewelry, on the other hand, is known primarily for the
use of precious and semiprecious stones—as well as to the strong influence
of nature on the designs, from ear studs in the form of a lotus to armbands
featuring petal-and-leaf weaving. When Gold Blossoms includes spectacular
rings, anklets, earrings, hair pendants, jeweled crowns, ivory combs, and an
elaborate swing and a gold throne for a deity. Some of the pieces are worn
in daily life, others dedicated to deities in Hindu temples. Photographs
from the 19th and 20th centuries will be displayed alongside the jewelry to
provide a fuller understanding of the ways in which jewelry is worn and
used.
